Christian Commitment Transcends
Wealth, Money, and Property
Matthew 6: 31-34 Do not be anxious
then, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "With what
shall we clothe ourselves?" For all these things the Gentiles eagerly
seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things
shall be added to you.
Mark 10:23 And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, "How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!"
Luke 5:27-28 And after that He went out, and noticed a tax-gatherer named Levi, sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, "Follow Me." And he left everything behind, and rose and began to follow Him.
Luke 6:29 Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.
Luke 14:33 So therefore, no one of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
Luke 18:22 And when Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess, and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."
Luke 19:8-10 And Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
John 2:15-16 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the moneychangers, and overturned their tables; and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a house of merchandise."
John 6:26-27 Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled. Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man shall give to you, for on Him the Father even God, has set His seal."
Acts 19:26-28 "And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all. And not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship should even be dethroned from her magnificence." And when they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
James 2:1-4 My brethren, do not hold your faith in our
glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.
For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine
clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, and you pay
special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say,
"You sit here in a good place," and you say to the poor man, "You stand
over there, or sit down by my footstool," have you not made distinctions
among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives?
Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, shall receive many times as much, and shall inherit eternal life.
Mark 10:29-30 Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake, but that he shall receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first, will be last; and the last, first."
Luke 9:59-62 And He said to another, "Follow
Me." But he said, "Permit me first to go and bury my
father." But He said to him, "Allow the
dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere
the kingdom of God." And another also said, "I will follow
You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home."
But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting
his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
Luke 14:26-27 If anyone comes to
Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children
and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be
My disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot
be My disciple.
Luke 18:29-30 And He said to them, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who shall not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life."
Luke 21:16-19 But you will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, and you will be hated by all on account of My name. Yet not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives.
John 4:21-24 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father. You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
John 5:39-42 You [Jewish leaders] search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life. I do not receive glory from men; but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.
John 7:45-49 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?" The officers answered, "Never did a man speak the way this man speaks." The Pharisees therefore answered them, "You have not also been led astray, have you? No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? But this multitude which does not know the Law is accursed."
John 12:42-43 Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.
Acts 4:1-3 And as they [Peter and John] were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees, came upon them, being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them, and put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening.
Acts 4:18-20 And when they [the rulers, elders, scribes, the high priest, etc. (cf. verses 5-6)] had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking what we have seen and heard."
Acts 5:27-30 And when they had brought them, they stood
them before the Council. And the high priest questioned them, saying,
"We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name,
and behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to
bring this man's [Jesus'] blood upon us." But Peter and the apostles
answered and said, "We must obey God rather than men."
Matthew 11: 28-30 Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light.
Matthew 13:44-46 The kingdom of heaven
is like a treasure hidden in he field, which a man found and hid; and from
joy over it he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven
is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great
value, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Matthew 18:1-4 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And He called child to Himself and set him before them, and said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
Matthew 24:44 For this reason you
be ready too; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think
He will.
Matthew 5:48 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who
says to Me, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who
does the will of My Father who is in heaven.
